 GitHub is a web-based hosting service for software development projects that use the Git revision control system.    GitHub offers both paid plans for private repositories, and free accounts for open source projects.
 
What is Git? 
Git is a Version Control System (VMS). It is a Revision Control System or Source Code Management(SCM) System.   It keeps track of  all your works and saves the different versions of your work. It allows several developers to collaborate for the same project.
 
How to use github?
1.  SignUp with  https://github.com/
2.  Create a new repository by clicking on ‘Create a new repo’ on top right of your webpage.

or by clicking on ‘New repository’

Fill the information, add a description of your project. Intialize your repository with a README file.
README file is not a necessary. But it is good, if you create a README file. By this file, you can add Documentation, Description of your project, Installation steps, of more necessary information about your Project.

3. Install git on your system:
$sudo apt-get install git
Now that you have Git installed, it’s time to configure your settings. To do this you need to open an app called Terminal.
$git config --global user.name "jasleenkaur"
$git config --global user.email "jasleen7956@gmail.com"
It will ask for your password, Enter the Password.
Now,  you have configured your Git account on your local machine. You don’t need to run above command again. Now. you can work for your repository.
  
4. Create a clone on your repository on your local machine.
$git clone https://github.com/jasleenkaur/Demo.git
This will make a clone of your desired repository on your local machine.
A repository is like a directory that will maintain all your files/folders in it.
 
Now you have a repository, I would prefer you to go through this link  http://try.github.com
